Eating Disorders

Eating disorders are rampant in our society and cause immeasurable damage to both individuals and their families.  The three types of eating disorders are Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, and Binge Eating Disorder.  Warning signs of a possible eating disorder include: restricted food intake, over focus on body image and fat, inability to maintain normal body weight, loss of menstrual cycles, food purging (vomiting, laxatives, diuretics, excessive exercise), and/ or binge eating.  Eating Disorders are usually first seen during adolescence and young adulthood.  Women are 10 times more likely to suffer from an eating disorder than men.

All three can cause significant medical complications and even death in some cases.  Possible repercussions include: dehydration, malnutrition, heart damage, tears of the esophagus, liver damage, tooth/gum erosion, kidney damage, hair loss, brittle nails, and depression.  Eating disorders are treatable with 70% of individuals recovering fully.  Early detection is important to prevent permanent damage and to maximize the benefits of therapy.  Serious cases of eating disorders often require inpatient treatment.
